Mississippi Civil Rights Museum
WESTEND: Clubs members from grades 6-12th traveled to Jackson recently to visit the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum. Our youth traveled through the timeline of the movement through many interactive galleries, and through the stories and personal effects on display there.
In one gallery, the firearm used to murdered Medgar Evers was on display along with a short film about his life. When the moment in the film came to speak about his murder some members gasped when they realized that it was Evers that was murdered and then the gun glowed in it's case. The point was made to the next generation.
Mr. Charles Hooker of Jackson, spoke with the group about growing up in those times in Jackson and what it was like for the youth during the movement. He spoke of a friend that was arrested as early as the age of thirteen, the same as many club members in attendance. It is so important that the next generation learn and retains this information so that history does not repeat itself. We will continue to rise!
